This terrace house, one of a pair with its neighbour, was built c. 1880, with major renovations and extensions carried out in 1988 and 1997.The need for structural and waterproofing repairs and the client’s desire to improve the internal layout saw Studio Trudeau commissioned to undertake a major renovation.
On the one hand, the works will conserve and renew the historic, front portion of the house, remediating rising damp and damaged masonry, replacing the front balcony, and replacing all windows and doors with double-glazed units.
On the other hand, the rear extension and garage, being in poor condition, will be replaced with new structures that frame the rear courtyard.
Services (bathroom and laundry) will be brought to the centre of the house, while living, dining and lounge areas will be brought to the rear, flowing into the refreshed courtyard. Finally, the garage will be rebuilt as a multi-purpose garage and art studio, flooded with natural light.
The project has received DA approval.
Looking south through the new kitchen, living and dining area on the ground floor, towards the rear courtyard. Fixed furniture has been kept to a minimum to suit different events and uses.
The courtyard is renewed with reused brick paving and refreshed with new plantings to provide a shaded, private area for entertainment and relaxation.
The garage, formerly a small and dark storage area, is opened to become a light-filled artist’s studio. with north-facing windows to the courtyard garden.
We’d love to hear from clients interested in new build, refurbishment and conservation projects, whether in Australia or Europe.
